Pantone Reports Color Trends for 2006/2007

Pantone reports that the European retail market for winter 2006/2007 is showing a transition from bold colors to monochrome. Simple, streamlined, clean, textures. Colors sound like they will be coming from nature again - fruits, flowers, earth, spices, metal, deep grassy and ocean colors, smoky colors, deep purples … the brighter colors used as accents. A lot of dusty, brushed textures. What can this mean to photography? Color trends flow into all aspects of a client’s event - clothes, flowers, decor, food, candles - and affects the entire mood and lighting.

    Sabrina,

I did some research on 2007 spring and summer color trends and found out some tidbits:

Fashion Trendsetter quoted the Asahi Kasei Spandex Group Europe saying:

“. . . white is in competition [with black] and looking to get front stage this summer and to become the season’s star. Pure, buttery, creamy and tinted. Retro feeling and grandmother’s white linen; whites also as a sign for ‘Kaballa’ influences. Whites and neutrals have traces of color and are here and there accompanied by real colors. Real colors need the neutrals, they move into each others direction and influence each other.”

They also predict that fabrics will lean to the textured, layered, washed, natural effect … almost “geological.”

Both of these sites reference the Dorlastan Color Directions called “Color in Motion.” Check out some pantone numbers at this link:

Pantone is selling their Home + Fashion 2007 forecast kit of course complete with swatches found at www.pantone.com. In the member area they haven’t included it yet in the articles section because it is so fresh. Why give it for free when they can sell it right?

Scottish Enterprise.com has a lot of textile trend information links that can be found summarized on the same FashionTrendsetter.com site.
Their Spring 2007 report shows similar colors but more muted and earthy. Their fall/winter 2007 colors are subdued further

I’m sure as a jewelry designer you found this site on your searches JQ International Jewelry Quorum - this page has a discussion on 2007 jewelry color trends too at:

    http://www.jqintl.com/uploads/features/features_forecasting_0206.asp

They refer to the CMG (Color Marketing Group) stating that for 2007 “30 new colors that will be richer, cleaner and deeper in tone: purples explode; oranges have replaced reds; yellows shift to lower chromas; greens continue to be driven by natural forces, blues gain increased presence; warm neutrals cluster together as deep rich browns; and cool neutrals bring new life to next year’s color palette.

Among the recognized colors are a transparent watery blue, blood orange, yellow orange, glazed green (soft melon or kiwi), metallic mauve, a yellow pink, brown flushed pink (lighter, redder and cooler than past browns), and a natural fusion of berries. The association notes that classic and emerging greens will be important in grayer, softer tones like complex yellow-green and shades of aqua.”

This is interesting - looking to Fall/Winter 2007/2008 - found a pdf at www.tfl.com discusses a trend report to be released in association with two Italian Designers Rimoldi and Belloni - with the following predictions:

“Chic ” - cool, fairytale colors, like misty forests, blues, greys mixed with warmer tones.

“Classic” - natural, surreal colors like earthy tones, inky blue

“Casual” - greens with ‘passionate touches’

? Not sure what that means … but check it out at:

Where can I get something like the “style guides” Target provides it’s seasonal vendors?

    Hi Judy!

I’m not completely sure what you are referring to but did find some interesting articles about Target and their trends.

    Hi Karen,

This may sound really dumb, but if I have a Pantone Colour Guide can I work out what these new colours (2006/7) are as they do not seem to be in my book.

    Hope you can help!

    Cheers,
    Rosano

  7. karen Says:

    Hi Rosano!

That’s actually a smart question! Pantone likely won’t have the new colors on your guide unless you have recently bought a new set from them as they update their guides every year. Also, if you use photoshop or illustrator, those colors won’t be in there automatically available either. I think you can download the new colors for PSD and AI from their website - you may have to sign in to be a member though, but it’s free and they have tons of great info in there. Another thing to think about - is if you do print work … ask your printer if they have the formulations or ink to handle the new colors.

I hope that helps a teeny bit? :)
